The Great Water Debate

One of the best things we can do for healthier skin is to drink more water. Right? Well, it turns out there is very little science to support the idea that drinking more water will lead to hydrated, healthier skin. If you are like me and struggle to drink that 2L of water every day, this could be good news. And if water won’t make a difference then what will?

Let’s first agree that drinking an adequate amount of water is absolutely vital for overall health including skin. We also know that drinking water flushes toxins out of our system and I personally feel healthier and more energetic when I’m drinking water everyday. . The question I want to address though, is what scientific evidence is there to support drinking more water will lead to hydrated skin? The scientific answer? There are no studies that show any evidence that connects increased water drinking to hydrated skin. Despite all the social media, health websites and beauty guides which have convinced us of this, there’s just nothing there when it comes to scientific evidence.

Here’s what the Mayo Clinic has to say on the matter:

Skin is made up of three layers — the outer layer (epidermis), the underlying skin (dermis) and the subcutaneous tissue. If the outermost layer of the epidermis doesn't contain enough water, skin will lose elasticity and feel rough. Despite this connection, however, there's a lack of research showing that drinking extra water has any impact on skin hydration or appearance.

When you drink water it first hits your intestines, gets absorbed into your bloodstream, is filtered through the kidneys and then hydrates all the cells in your body. When our skin is dehydrated the cause is not a lack of inner hydration but because the outer layer of our skin (Stratum Corneum) has experienced TEWL or trans-epidermal water loss (‘evaporation’ to you and me).. Wind, cold weather, dry weather, overwashing our face with chemicals and showers that are too long and too hot are just some of the culprits that lead to dry skin. Ageing, pollution, smoking and genes are other reasons for dehydrated skin.

So what does work?

By looking at the science and employing a little bit of common sense it’s really easy to keep skin healthy and hydrated.

  • Avoid long hot showers.

  • Don’t overwash your face with harsh cleansers. I meet so many people who ask me about cleansing in the morning. If you cleanse at night then there is no reason to repeat it in the morning. A quick rinse with tepid water should do the trick,

  • Applying a facial oil as a barrier from moisture loss especially in environments that are drying to skin such as central heating, windy days, skiing, etc.

For most people having bright, glowing and hydrated skin is their main goal and that’s why I wanted to create two products that are the most effective for hydrated skin. Our SMOOTH Hyaluronic Acid and our STELLAR Daily Serum work together as a ‘humectant’ and an ‘occlusive’. The SMOOTH Hyaluronic Acid is a humectant and has two great qualities, drawing moisture from the dermis to the epidermis and its sponge-like qualities that absorb and retain moisture. All that moisture is sealed in with the Stellar Daily Serum facial oil which is an ‘occlusive’ moisturising and creating a barrier from evaporation. Stellar is also full of antioxidants which protects skin from pollution (another factor in dehydrated skin). These two plant-based products are key to an easy skincare routine that delivers the greatest impact on your skin’s health.

You can purchase our SMOOTH and STELLAR along with our DREAM Cleanser when you buy the cost saving TRIO.

Save when you purchase the complete DESAVERY skincare routine. The only three products you need for a simple and highly effective skincare routine.

SMOOTH HYALURONIC ACID with Clary Sage and Bergamot, 20 ML

Our plant-based hyaluronic acid, has a low molecular weight so it’s easily absorbed by the skin. It’s silky, smooth and water-based. It dries very quickly leaving skin soft, hydrated and dewy.

Prickly pear seed oil is the main ingredient in addition to rosehip and camellia seed oil. This combination of plant oils delivers a powerful formula of compounds thatn nourishes, brightens and hydrates. Our users have remarked at how fast absorbing this oil serum is. Bergamot, clary sage and frankincense are all mood boosters so you feel great when you use STELLAR.

Camellia and castor oil work together to deep clean pores without wiping away any of the precious microbiome which maintains skin’s health. Spikenard, bergamot and ylang ylang will have you feeling sleepy to create a perfect end of the day ritual.
